People overcomplicate community building

If you're a new operator, here's what I'd avoid.

Assuming events alone build connection. Focusing solely on the physical space. Thinking more members means better culture. Ignoring your team's role in shaping how the place feels.

And here's what I'd do instead.

Design experiences with your members' input, not for them. Create opportunities for organic collisions. Celebrate member wins publicly. Focus on quality over quantity in your programme.

Focus on that for the first ninety days, then build from there.

None of this is complicated, which is exactly why it gets skipped. Community work looks like it should be strategic and mostly it isn't. It's noticing, and then doing something small about what you noticed, over and over, until people feel known.

The operators who get this right aren't the ones with the biggest events budget. They're the ones whose team knows everyone's name.
